Texas

Nov. 4th-Texas Panhandle- the north western part of Texas. As we traveled through we couldn't help but notice all the small businesses that were closed or in a poor state of repair. They have had drought in this area for a long time and while the big ranches were able to prosper the smaller farms and businesses did not do as well. The countryside is suitable for cattle ranching rugged and desert-like. In the areas that have irrigation the primary crops are cotton, pecans, corn.and something we can only guess to be either buckwheat or peanuts.Near the town of Artesia we saw lots of oil wells and a large refinery. In stark contrast to the obvious poverty and dilapatated buildings the Texas Information Centre was modern and futuristic-one of the best such facilities we have seen and even included a tornado shelter.
